There is never a Silent Night on the box at Christmas time, as this poll of the 20 most dramatic TV moments reveals.

The top 20, revealed by UKTV Drama, sees moments from EastEnders to the heart-breaking ending of The Snowman, David Tennant’s final episode as Doctor Who, and the romantic finale of Tim and Dawn in The Office.

So what will your favourite festive moment be?

1. EastEnders (1986)

Over 30 million people tuned in to watch Dirty Den give Angie Watts divorce papers for Christmas after he revealed he knew she’d been fabricating her terminal illness.

After the memorable episode aired, actress Anita Dobson said: “I didn’t know what had hit me. People were following me home in cars, I couldn’t go to pubs or supermarkets or walk down the street.”

2. The Royle Family (1999)

Emotions run high in the 1999 Christmas special when Denise goes into labour with baby David three weeks early in the bathroom.

3. Sherlock (2012)

It was a memorable rooftop finale where Moriarty convinces Sherlock that only his suicide will save the lives of Watson and Mrs Hudson.

In the special, which pulled in over nine million viewers, Moriarty appears to shoot himself as Sherlock jumps to his ‘death’.

4. The Vicar of Dibley (1999)

In the 1999 special Alice Tinker, played by the late Emma Chambers, goes into labour while she is playing the Virgin Mary in the Nativity.

Later, she has to check with Dawn French’s vicar Geraldine whether or not she has actually given birth to the Son of God, even though her baby is a little girl.

5. Gavin and Stacey (2010)

Amid the drama of Nessa jilting Dave Coaches at the altar, Stacey reveals to Gavin that she’s pregnant after believing they wouldn’t be able to have children.

John Prescott and Noel Sullivan from Hearsay both made cameos in the final episode of the sitcom.

6. The Snowman (1982)

Tissues at the ready – the moment when the little boy in The Snowman wakes up to find his best friend has melted will never fail to pull at the heartstrings.

Author Raymond Briggs explained he wanted to introduce children to the concept of mortality.

7. EastEnders (2006)

Pauline Fowler, the best known battleaxe in Albert Square, dramatically died of a brain haemorrhage and was seen taking her final breaths under the Christmas tree.

Previously, she had faked a brain tumour in an attempt to keep son Martin away from partner Sonia.

8. Doctor Who (2006)

With killer Christmas trees and exploding baubles, this Doctor Who special had it all.

Newly regenerated 10th doctor David Tennant starred alongside Catherine Tate as Donna in the festive episode.

9. The Office (2003)

After leaving the Christmas party early with her boyfriend Lee, Dawn returns alone and marches up to Tim when they finally kiss.

The two-part special had over 13 million viewers.

10. Emmerdale (2016)

In this tear-jerking special Ashley Thomas is seen struggling to remember it’s Christmas as his dementia gets worse.

Viewers followed his illness throughout the year before it took a turn for the worse at a Christmas carol service.

11. Victoria (2017)

Queen Victoria, played by Jenna Coleman, is searching for Prince Albert in the snow-covered grounds of Buckingham Palace when she spots him skating on a frozen lake – but the surface of the ice cracks and he plunges into the water.

Queen Vic throws herself after him, managing to grab him and pull him back up to safety.

12. Coronation Street (2011)

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a bit of drama on the cobbles and the festive episode from 2011 definitely had that. Young couple Katy and Chesney became parents – after Katy gave birth while playing Mary in the Bessie Street school nativity.

Aptly named baby Joseph isn’t the first festive baby in the soap however – Sally Webster gave birth to daughter Rosie on Christmas Eve in 1990.

13. Downton Abbey (2012)

Tragedy strikes in this special when Lady Mary returns early from Scotland, rushing to Cottage Hospital to deliver her healthy baby.

Matthew soon joins her and meets his son and heir, but after he leaves to go back to Downton Abbey, he is killed in a car accident.

14. Downton Abbey (2011)

Many Downton fans rooted for the romance between Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley.

In this emotional episode, Lady Mary revealed her secret baggage to Matthew – that she’s slept with someone else, but he decides he wants to marry her anyway.

15. EastEnders (2007)

As the Branning family gathered to watch Stacey and Bradley’s wedding DVD on Christmas Day, 14.38 million watched as Stacey and Max’s affair was revealed after they were caught kissing on camera.

The episode ends with the camera on Stacey, wide-eyed in horror, before the iconic EastEnders ‘duff duff’ theme tune rolls in.

It was the moment where Rodney and Del Boy finally became millionaires after an old pocket watch they owned sold for £6.2 million at an auction.

18. Call the Midwife (2013)

When the country is still recovering from World War Two, an unexploded bomb is accidentally detonated near the convent, sparking huge panic.
